Our Church
St. Philip the Apostle Parish in Pasadena was established in February 1921 by Bishop John C. Cantwell. The first Mass was held on March 1, 1921, in a rented hall. Fr. Daniel O’Connell, the first pastor, secured land at Hill Avenue and Cordova Street, where the church was built and dedicated in January 1922.
In 1926, a $25,000 donation enabled the purchase of additional property and the founding of the parish school. The Sisters of Charity began teaching in September 1927. Over the years, the parish expanded with new buildings, including a rectory and a parish center.
Fr. O’Connell’s successor, Fr. Thomas O’Regan, served for 20 years, followed by Msgr. William North, Msgr. Carl Gerken, Msgr. Clifford Parker, Msgr. Gary Bauler, and Fr. Joe Moniz, who retired in 2018. Each pastor contributed to the growth and enrichment of the parish, enhancing facilities, expanding ministries, and fostering a strong community. Under Fr. Moniz, significant developments included a meditation garden, new school buildings, church restoration, and community-building activities that united the diverse parish in faith.
